The Metro Is Genuinely Good — With One Big Gap
Dubai's driverless Metro is clean, cheap and air-conditioned, and it connects the airport, Downtown, and Marina efficiently. The gap: it does not reach Palm Jumeirah directly — you'll transfer to the separate Palm Monorail or a taxi for that stretch.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing Are Easy to Rely On
Official RTA taxis are metered, widely available, and reasonably priced by international standards. Careem (UAE-founded) and Uber both operate normally and are often the simplest option for Palm Jumeirah or late-night trips the Metro doesn't cover well.
Car Rental Works, But Isn't Necessary for a City Trip
The UAE drives on the right, and Dubai's highways are modern and well-signed, so renting is genuinely easy if you're planning day trips beyond the city (desert, other emirates). For a Dubai-only trip, most visitors don't need one — parking at malls is straightforward but traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road at rush hour is real.
Walking Is Not the Default Here
Outside of mall interiors and a handful of waterfront promenades (Dubai Marina Walk, JBR Beach), Dubai isn't a walkable city — distances are long, streets are highway-scale, and for eight months of the year the heat makes walking uncomfortable in the middle of the day.
For most trips: Metro for Downtown and Marina, taxi or Careem for everything else, and a rental car only if you're heading out to the desert or another emirate on your own schedule.
